HAWKS FLY RESERVES FLAG
Monday, 21 September 2009
Box Hill deservedly won its second VFL Reserves premiership after a 28-point win over Sandringham at TEAC Oval on Sunday.
The Hawks led for most of the second half before eventually running out 16.18.(114) to 13.8.(86) grand final victors.
The Fred Hill Memorial Medal was awarded to 19-year-old Leigh Kitchin, who was superb rebounding from defence and setting up play, becoming the second Box Hill player to win the award.
Tom Purcell and the hard-running Jake Bull were also amongst Box Hill’s best.
For the Zebras, Daniel Gribbin, hard-working midfielder Rennie Gilchrist and exciting forward Ross Tungatulum were their best.
Box Hill kicked the last three goals of the game from the midway point of the final term to seal the win.
After a goal for goal last term, two goals from Glen Parker and one from Ben Kennedy saw the Hawks home.
Lively up forward, Sandringham’s Tungatulum caused much chaos for the Hawks defence early.
His second goal at the 26-minute mark of the first term after a wonderful chase gave Sandringham a three-point lead at the first change.
Bull and forward Gary Conyers kicked two quick goals at the beginning of the second term to give the Hawks a 10-point lead.
But the Zebras answered in a dominant period in the middle of the quarter.
Beau Cosson, Brett Eddy and Tungatulum answered, arresting back the lead for the Zebras.
But a late goal from Carl Peterson brought the Hawks back to within one-point at the main change.
After the sides traded goals to open the third term, the Hawks went on a four-goal run in what looked like being a match-winning period.
When Kennedy kicked truly after a downfield free kick at the 16-minute mark of the clichéd premiership quarter, the Hawks were out to a 24-point lead.
The Zebras continued to fight and a goal after the siren to Khan Haretuku had his side back within seven points.
It was goal for goal in the first 10 minutes of the final quarter.
But the Hawks ran over a tiring Sandringham to win a deserved premiership after being the best side throughout the season.
