Box Hill Hawks season wraps to a close with the prestigious Col Austen Trophy up for grabs in Box Hill City Oval’s newly built South Pavilion on Friday October 2nd.  

The ultimate accolade for a Box Hill Hawks player, the Col Austen Trophy is awarded each year to the clubs best and fairest player.

With a role honour including 2002 Col Austen Trophy winner Hawthorn Captain Sam Mitchell, the award gives the opportunity for winners to enter a select group of past Box Hill champion clubman.

Since 1951, the Col Austen Trophy has not only been a night of glitz and glamour, but of celebration of players’ achievements and hard work over a long year of VFL football.

After the Hawks picked up the likes of Adem Yze, Sam Iles and Ed Curnow at the beginning of the 2009 season, the Col Austen Trophy heated up.

Current Co-Captain Steve Kenna, the 2008 Col Austen Trophy winner with 134 votes, will be a favourite for the award for the 2nd year in a row after another consistent season for the Hawks.

Lukas Markovic joining Kenna as Co-Captain for the 2009 season has been a general in the Hawks defensive lines and will look to turn around last years result after finishing in 2nd place as runner-up, 19 votes behind Kenna.

A long list of players will be in contention this season including one of the VFL’s most improved players in Cameron Pedersen, midfield magnet Sam Gibson, the versatile tall in Tim Walsh and goal sneak Ben Smithwick.

Box Hill’s new recruits in Adem Yze, Sam Iles, and Ed Curnow will all challenge the regular Hawks of old. Yze and Iles won the Hawks games on many occasions with some remarkable goals and packages for the highlight reel.

While Ed Curnow’s toughness and aggression won the Hawks over very early in the piece imposing himself as a classy midfielder, and with a superb first season Curnow like Iles and Yze are all good chances.

Not only is the Col Austen Trophy up for grabs, but other awards including the President’s Trophy, Ron Gibbs Trophy, A.P. Dickinson Trophy, Best Club Man Award and Best First Year Player as some of the awards making up Box Hill’s night of nights.

Box Hill’s young guns are not forgotten with many awards presented for the Hawks Development Team with the side’s impressive season posing a close countdown to decide the overall winner.  

A night of fun and frivolity, the Col Austen Trophy is an event each and every Box Hill Hawks player and supporter looks forward too.
