Box Hill Development Team Match Report
Round 20: at Box Hill City Oval (30th August)
By Daniel Dufty
The Box Hill Development Team claimed for the 1st time in the clubs history the VFL Reserves Minor Premiership after demolishing Casey Scorpions by 140 points.
After resting with the bye in Round 19, Box Hill coming out with intent right from the opening bounce were unstoppable with Casey unable to stem the flow of Box Hill’s barrage of goals.
Box Hill was impressive all over with thirty extra scoring shots (42-12), two-hundred and twenty extra disposals (470-250) and thirty-five greater clearances (70-35).
Holding Box Hill for a short period, Casey managed to control the opening minutes of the first-quarter but from then on it was a Hawks onslaught.
Lifting every quarter, after leading by 29 points at half-time the Hawks slapped on 9.4 then 9.8 in the forth to blitz to a humiliating loss for the Scorpions.
Joel Cross lead the pack again with 45 disposals in an outstanding display as the Hawks marched onto their 11th consecutive victory.
Chris Hoegel kicked a dead eye 7.1 while accumulating 23 touches while Andrew Renton’s transition up forward proved damaging for the Scorpions kicking 6.2.
Never able to adapt and figure out the Hawks game, Casey crumbled and never looked in the match.
Leigh Kitchin continued his good form with 37 disposals while Andrew McGuinness (34), David Marcius (33) and Beau Coyle (32) were also the better players for the Hawks.
Andrew Renton while kicking 6.2 also compiled a neat 16 disposals (27 hitouts) with compatriot ruckman Andrew Hogan 16 (37 hitouts) also getting a good touch of the football.
Glen Parker kicking 3 goals also provided a lot of support up forward and setting up play with 32 disposals especially in the 2nd half when the Hawks broke open the match.
Box Hill can look at the match with the 140 point margin as a true representation of the side’s status as the VFL Reserves Minor Premier.
Now with a weeks rest again, Box Hill’s finals series gets underway in the second week with Williamstown as well earning the week off with both sides finishing 1st and 2nd respectively.
The VFL Reserves Finals Series is split up over three weeks with two Elimination Finals in Week 1 followed by two Preliminary Finals in Week 2 and the final at TEAC Oval a week later.
Six of the eleven teams make-up the finals series with both Box Hill and Williamstown the top contenders currently in the race for the flag.
Both Preliminary Finals will be played at TEAC Oval now with no home finals as TEAC Oval plays as a neutral ground for all teams without any advantage.
Box Hill is on the verge of something special. Only time will tell. Go Hawks!
